That of tugs is a real-world within the maritime field.
Fascinating, adventurous and complex. A tugboat Captain must well know the theory surrounding these vessels and, even more, must have the ability to shape it with his own experience in the environment in which he works, considering the numerous variables and then adapt everything to the style of manoeuvre of the pilot on duty. Not everyone can stand out in this work. The Port Tug Course deals with essential topics; as we always say: we propose the theory necessary for practice.

The learning outcomes of the course Part 2 of 2 will include:

Knowledge of Push, Pull, Push & Pull methods
How Many Tugs to Use
Importance of Teamwork: Master, Pilot and Tug’s Captain
Knowledge in Tug Wash Effect – Coanda
How To Work in the Fog
Three examples in real-life Ship handling

Deepening one’s knowledge of Propellers, Rudders, and Anchors is the first step in a study program on ship manoeuvring, and this is what we did in the first three “ABC of manoeuvring” courses.

Let’s now move to the next level by addressing a fascinating subject, rich in history and professionalism: that of tugs.

The world of Tugs

Instead of a “topic”, it would be better to define this as “the world of tugs”. Understanding more means discovering a maze of streets and alleys that lead to specific skills and jobs, very different from each other. But have a common denominator: the “tractor of the sea”.

Just think of harbour towing, the offshore towing, the assistance of offshore rigs, those who work in firefighting, in the river, and so on. In each of these sectors, workers must develop specific skills.

the IMO collects the guidelines for correct towing at sea: Resolution A.765(18) Guidelines on the safety of towed ships

This course chapter deals with the tugs used to aid the manoeuvring of ships inside the harbour. We do it – applying the concept already expressed above – studying them from a practical perspective, seasoned with the theory strictly necessary for the purpose.
